Swing shift: hours and schedules
Swing shift has two meanings. In most job ads it is the evening shift between day and night shift, usually 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. In plants, police and hospitals a swing shift schedule is one where your crew swings between day shifts and night shifts.

Swing shift hours
As the evening shift, swing shift sits between day shift and the overnight shift. The common hours are:
| Shift length | Common swing shift hours |
|---|---|
| 8 hours | 3 p.m. – 11 p.m., 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. or 4 p.m. – midnight |
| 10 hours | 2 p.m. – midnight or 4 p.m. – 2 a.m., overlapping the day and night shifts |
| 12 hours | There is no evening shift: days and nights only (7 to 7 or 6 to 6) |
The employer sets the hours; no federal rule defines them. For the other two shifts, see 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift hours.
What a swing shift schedule is
The second meaning is a rotation. On a swing shift schedule your crew works some weeks on days and some on nights, instead of staying on one shift. Job ads say “rotating shifts” or “12-hour swing shifts” for the same thing. It shares the night shifts fairly between crews, and everyone takes turns on the less popular hours.
The price is the change itself. Every swing from days to nights means moving your sleep by about 12 hours, and the first days off after a run of nights go partly to recovery. Schedules differ mostly in how often you swing and how many days off you get around the change.
12-hour swing shift schedules compared
These rotations all use four crews on 12-hour shifts, average 42 hours a week and give one crew on days and one on nights every day. For one crew in 2027:
| Schedule | Cycle | Most shifts of one kind in a row | Day shifts | Night shifts | Full weekends off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panama (rotating 2-2-3) | 28 days | 3 | 91 | 91 | 26 |
| DuPont | 28 days | 4 | 91 | 91 | 26 |
| 4 on 4 off, rotating | 16 days | 4 | 92 | 90 | 21 |
| 3 on 3 off, rotating | 12 days | 3 | 92 | 90 | 17 |
| 2 on 2 off, rotating | 8 days | 2 | 92 | 91 | 13 |
| 7 on 7 off, rotating | 28 days | 7 | 91 | 91 | 26 |
| Continental (2 days, 2 nights, 4 off) | 8 days | 2 | 92 | 90 | 21 |
One crew, cycle starting Monday, January 4, 2027. A full weekend is Saturday and Sunday both off.
The Panama and 7 on 7 off swing every two weeks, so you have long runs on one shift. The 2 on 2 off and continental swing every few days, so your body never fully settles on nights, but each run of nights is short. The DuPont mixes blocks of three and four. Choose any of them in the shift calendar and pick “All crews” to see who is on days and who is on nights each day.
The southern swing: 8-hour shifts through all three
The southern swing rotates four crews through days, evenings and nights on 8-hour shifts: 7 days, 2 off, 7 evenings, 2 off, 7 nights and 3 off, a 28-day cycle. In 2027 one crew works 273 shifts: 91 days, 91 evenings and 91 nights, 2,184 hours in all. Full weekends off are rare, 13 in the year, because the only breaks are two or three days. Compare it with other 8-hour options on 24/7 shift schedules.
Swing shift pay
Federal law does not require a premium for evening or night work; the Fair Labor Standards Act leaves it to the employer and the employee or union (U.S. Department of Labor). Where a swing or night differential is paid, it counts toward the regular rate used for overtime (29 CFR 778.207(b)). As a benchmark, federal wage-grade employees get 7.5% extra for shifts that fall mostly between 3 p.m. and midnight and 10% for shifts mostly between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. (5 U.S.C. 5343(f)).
On a rotating schedule only part of your shifts carry a night differential, so yearly pay depends on how many nights the rotation gives you. The table above counts them; the pay estimate in the shift calendar adds the differential for your own dates.
Living with a swing shift
A few habits make rotating easier. Plan the first day off after nights as a recovery day, not a day for errands. Keep the same sleep window for the whole run of nights, including the days in between if you have only one off. Share the calendar with your family so the swing weeks are no surprise: the shift calendar gives a link that opens on any phone. On the night the clocks change, a 12-hour night shift lasts 13 or 11 hours; see daylight saving time on night shift.
