12-hour rotating shift schedule with 3 teams
Three teams can cover every hour of the year with 12-hour shifts, but each person then works 56 hours a week on average. The most common rotation is 2 days, 2 nights, 2 off: a 6-day cycle with the teams two days apart.

The math: why three teams means 56 hours
A week has 168 hours. Divided by three teams, each works 56 hours a week; with four teams it is 42 hours, the average of the Pitman, Panama or DuPont. So a three-team 12-hour schedule always carries about 16 hours of weekly overtime per person under the federal 40-hour rule: about 832 to 832 overtime hours a year with this rotation, depending on the workweek start. Other three-team options
| Rotation | Cycle | Hours a week | Most shifts in a row | Longest break | Full weekends off in 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 days, 2 nights, 2 off | 6 days | 56 | 4 | 2 days | 8 to 9, depending on the weekday your cycle starts |
| 1 day, 1 night, 1 off | 3 days | 56 | 2 | 1 day | 0 |
| 24/48 (one 24-hour shift) | 3 days | 56 | 1 | 2 days | 18 |
The fire service solves the same problem with one 24-hour shift and two days off (the 24/48), helped by the 7(k) exemption that raises their overtime threshold. In plants and hospitals, most employers add a fourth team instead.
When three teams make sense
For a short period, a seasonal peak or a small site, three teams can work with the overtime budgeted. For the long run, four teams at 42 hours are the norm. Choose “2 days, 2 nights, 2 off (3 crews)” in the shift calendar to get your year, with every crew, holidays and a file for your phone.
