Pitman vs DuPont schedule

Both average 42 hours a week on 12-hour shifts with four crews. The Pitman spreads the time off evenly (never more than 3 days on or off), while the DuPont saves it up into a 7-day break every four weeks, paid for with blocks of 4 shifts and quick swaps between nights and days.

Which one suits you

Both put four crews on 12-hour shifts and average 42 hours a week, so yearly pay at the same hourly rate is almost the same. The difference is how the time off is arranged.

Choose the Pitman for short blocks and regular weekends: never more than three shifts in a row and a three-day weekend off every other week. It also works with crews fixed on days or on nights, so people who cannot rotate can stay on one shift.

Choose the DuPont if a full week off every four weeks matters more: with 4 shifts of leave it becomes 14 days off in a row. Expect blocks of four shifts, a quick change from days to nights in the middle of the cycle and more weekly overtime, because some weeks have 72 hours and others none.

How to choose

Put both patterns side by side in the calendar with your own start date: weekends off, holidays worked and pay depend on where your crew sits in the cycle, not only on the pattern. Then compare yearly pay at your hourly rate in the shift pay calculator, which applies federal and state overtime.
