9/80 schedule calendar
On a 9/80 schedule you work 80 hours in nine days: eight 9-hour days and one 8-hour day, with every other Friday off. Enter your first Friday off and get all of them for the year.
How a 9/80 schedule works
| Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 8 | 44 |
| Week 2 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 9 | off | 36 |
That is 80 hours every two weeks, the same as five 8-hour days, with 26 extra days off a year (27 in a year with 53 Fridays, such as 2027, depending on where your cycle falls).
Overtime: why the Friday is split
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime is due for hours over 40 in a workweek, and the workweek is “a fixed and regularly recurring period of 168 hours” that “may begin on any day and at any hour of the day” (29 CFR 778.105). Week 1 above has 44 hours, so with a normal Monday-to-Sunday workweek the 4 extra hours would be overtime.
Employers avoid this by starting the workweek in the middle of the 8-hour Friday, for example at noon. Four of the Friday hours then belong to week 1 and four to week 2, and each workweek has exactly 40 hours. The start time must stay fixed; it can only be changed permanently and not to avoid overtime.
California is different: overtime is also due after 8 hours in a day unless a valid alternative workweek schedule was adopted by a secret-ballot vote (California Labor Code 511). Without one, the ninth hour of each day is overtime there.
Holidays on a 9/80
A holiday on a 9-hour day is a 9-hour day off, but many employers pay 8 hours of holiday pay, so you use one hour of leave or make it up. When a holiday falls on your Friday off, some employers give another day off and some do not. The calculator lists the federal holidays (on their actual date) that fall on your Fridays off; check your own policy.
Similar schedules
The 4/10 (four 10-hour days a week) and the 5/4/9 (a 9/80 by another name) are also compressed workweeks. For rotating shifts that cover nights and weekends, see the shift calendar.
Questions
How many Fridays off do you get on a 9/80 in 2027?
26 or 27. 2027 has 53 Fridays, so if your first Friday off is January 1 you get 27, otherwise 26.
Is a 9/80 schedule legal?
Yes. Federal law only requires overtime after 40 hours in a workweek, and the 9/80 keeps each workweek at 40 hours by starting it in the middle of the 8-hour Friday (29 CFR 778.105). Some states with daily overtime, such as California, need an approved alternative workweek.
What is the difference between a 9/80 and a 4/10?
A 9/80 gives one Friday off every two weeks with 9-hour days; a 4/10 gives a day off every week with 10-hour days.
