PST to EST

Add 3 hours to Pacific Time to get Eastern Time: 9:00 a.m. PST is 12:00 p.m. EST, and 11:00 a.m. PST is 2:00 p.m. EST. The difference stays at 3 hours all year, because both zones change their clocks for daylight saving time on the same night.

EST to PST

Go the other way by subtracting 3 hours: 9:00 a.m. Eastern is 6:00 a.m. Pacific, and 5:00 p.m. Eastern is 2:00 p.m. Pacific. After 9:00 p.m. Pacific it is already the next day in the East.

PST, PDT, EST and EDT

Pacific Standard Time is UTC−8 and Eastern Standard Time UTC−5 (15 U.S.C. 261). From 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March to 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November both use daylight time, PDT (UTC−7) and EDT (UTC−4) (15 U.S.C. 260a). Most people write “PST” and “EST” all year; the 3-hour gap is the same either way. Most of Arizona stays on standard time, so in summer it matches Pacific Time and in winter Mountain Time.

Arizona and Hawaii

Most of Arizona and all of Hawaii stay on standard time all year, as federal law allows. So in summer, noon in Los Angeles is noon in Phoenix and 9:00 a.m. in Honolulu; in winter, noon in Los Angeles is 1:00 p.m. in Phoenix and 10:00 a.m. in Honolulu. Denver, on Mountain Time with daylight saving, is always one hour ahead of Los Angeles.

Working hours that overlap

A 9-to-5 day on each coast overlaps for 5 hours: from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific, which is 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Eastern. Calls that must include both coasts fit best between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. Eastern (9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Pacific), clear of the East Coast's late afternoon and the West Coast's early morning.

National dispatch centers, help desks and on-call teams that span both coasts often schedule in Eastern Time. If you start at 6:00 a.m. Pacific to join a 9:00 a.m. Eastern huddle, count those hours like any other: the hours calculator works out your day, and Eastern Time has the clock change dates.
