The rule in the US

Federal law sets daylight saving time from 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March to 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November (15 U.S.C. 260a). A state can choose to stay on standard time all year; Hawaii and most of Arizona do. A state cannot adopt daylight saving time all year on its own under this law. In March, 2:00 a.m. jumps to 3:00 a.m.; in November, 2:00 a.m. becomes 1:00 a.m. again, so the hour from 1:00 to 2:00 happens twice.

The rule in the UK

British Summer Time runs from 1:00 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday in March to 1:00 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday in October (Summer Time Order 2002). In October the clocks go back from 2:00 a.m. BST to 1:00 a.m. GMT. Because the UK and US change on different Sundays, the time difference between London and New York is four hours instead of five for about three weeks in March and one week around the end of October.

Working a night shift when the clocks change

If you work through the change, your shift is one hour longer in the fall and one hour shorter in the spring: a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift lasts 13 hours on November 1, 2026 and 11 hours on March 14, 2027. Under federal rules you are paid for the hours you actually work, so the extra hour in November counts toward your weekly overtime. The night shift and daylight saving time calculator works out your exact hours and pay.

Your body clock

Losing an hour in March feels like a short night for most people, and harder for anyone already short of sleep. The sleep calculator helps you plan bedtime around a set wake-up time. For calendars that do not move when the clocks change, the shift files from the shift calendar use all-day events.
