Military time chart
Military time counts the hours from 00 to 23, so there is no a.m. or p.m.: 0700 is 7 a.m. and 1900 is 7 p.m. For any hour after noon, take away 12 to get the regular time, or add 12 to go the other way.

How to read military time
The first two digits are the hour and the last two the minutes. From 0100 to 1259 the hours match the morning clock (0930 is 9:30 a.m.). From 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hour (1745 is 5:45 p.m.). Midnight is 0000, the start of the day; some schedules write 2400 for midnight at the end of a day, so a night shift may show as 1900 to 0700 or 1900 to 2400 and 0000 to 0700.
People usually say it as two pairs: 0700 is “oh seven hundred” or “zero seven hundred”, 1930 is “nineteen thirty”, and the hours are often followed by “hours”.
Common mistakes
- Noon and midnight. 1200 is noon and 0000 is midnight. 12:30 a.m., half an hour after midnight, is 0030, not 1230.
- Adding hours. Military time is still in hours and minutes: 1745 plus 30 minutes is 1815, not 1775.
- Decimal hours. Payroll often uses decimals: a shift from 0645 to 1915 is 12 hours 30 minutes, 12.5 hours. The hours calculator does it for you.
- Time zones. The same clock reading means a different moment in another zone; aviation and IT logs use UTC, written with a Z. See UTC time.
Military time on shift schedules
Hospitals, police, fire departments and plants write shift times on the 24-hour clock because it removes any doubt about a.m. and p.m. A 12-hour rotation usually runs 0700–1900 and 1900–0700; 8-hour shifts often run 0700–1500, 1500–2300 and 2300–0700. See 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift hours. To total hours on a time card that uses the 24-hour clock, use the hours calculator.
Military and aviation schedules also add a time zone letter. “Z”, or Zulu time, means Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
