GMT time now

GMT, Greenwich Mean Time, is UTC+0 and shows the same clock time as Coordinated Universal Time all year. It is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, 6 of Central, 7 of Mountain and 8 of Pacific, one hour less while the US is on daylight time. The UK uses GMT only in winter: from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October it is on BST, GMT+1.

US zones are defined by law as a number of hours behind UTC, which GMT matches: Eastern −5, Central −6, Mountain −7, Pacific −8 (15 U.S.C. 261). From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November each moves one hour closer (15 U.S.C. 260a). Arizona stays on standard time all year (A.R.S. 1-242).

Is GMT 4 or 5 hours ahead of EST?

5 hours ahead of EST, Eastern Standard Time, used from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March. 4 hours ahead of EDT, the summer time used the rest of the year. So 12:00 GMT is 7:00 a.m. in New York in January and 8:00 a.m. in July. The same rule gives 8 or 7 hours for the Pacific zone.

GMT, UTC and BST

GMT and UTC show the same time; UTC is the standard that clocks are set from, and GMT is the name the UK uses for its winter time. BST, British Summer Time, is “one hour in advance of Greenwich mean time” (Summer Time Act 1972, section 1). So in summer, 12:00 GMT is 1:00 p.m. in London. Offsets such as “GMT−5” on websites mean the same as UTC−5. For the UK clock change dates, see UK time; for Zulu time on the 24-hour clock, see UTC time.

GMT on shift work

Teams that hand over between the UK and the US, offshore crews and aviation staff often keep rotas in GMT or UTC so that nobody's clock change moves a shift. A 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. day shift in New York is 12:00 to 00:00 GMT in winter and 11:00 to 23:00 GMT in summer. Write both times on the handover sheet, and check the weeks in March, October and November when the UK and US are on different rules.
