PTO on 12-hour shifts

Paid time off is usually counted in hours, so each 12-hour shift you take off uses 12 hours. 80 hours of PTO, two weeks for a weekday worker, is only 6.7 twelve-hour shifts. Because you work fewer days, though, those shifts cover more calendar days off.

Why it still goes further than it looks

On a 12-hour rotation you work about half the days of the year, so the days off around your leave are already long. On a Pitman, taking the 3 shifts of one Friday-to-Sunday block gives you 7 days off in a row. On a DuPont, 4 shifts of leave next to the 7-day break give 14 days. On a 3 on 3 off, 3 shifts give 9. Use the shift calendar to see where your blocks fall before you book.

How PTO accrual works

Most employers accrue PTO per hour worked. A plan that gives 80 hours a year for 2,080 hours worked accrues about 0.0385 hours per hour (80 ÷ 2,080). On a 12-hour rotation with 2,184 scheduled hours, the same rate gives about 84 hours. Some plans cap the balance or accrue per pay period instead; your handbook says which.

Federal law does not require paid vacation or sick leave: the FLSA “does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations, sick leave or federal or other holidays” (US Department of Labor). Some states and cities require paid sick leave, and PTO plans are set by the employer or union contract.

Questions

How many days off for 12-hour shifts?

Divide your PTO hours by 12. 80 hours is 6.7 shifts, 120 hours is 10 shifts. Because shifts are grouped, a few shifts of leave can give a week or more off in a row.

How much PTO do you accrue for 40 hours?

On a plan of 80 hours a year for 2,080 hours, about 1.54 hours for every 40 hours worked (0.0385 per hour).

How much PTO do you get for a 10-hour shift?

Each 10-hour day off uses 10 hours of PTO. 80 hours covers 8 ten-hour days.

Does PTO count toward overtime?

Not under federal rules: overtime is based on hours actually worked. Some contracts count it anyway.

Is PTO required by law?

Federal law does not require paid vacation. Some states and cities require paid sick leave.
